Hill Country by my Window
Watercolor, India ink, pencil, 22”x30”, 2022, NFS
“Hill Country by my Window” was painted during a four year residency I spent by Houston Texas 2019-2023. In so many of my watercolor paintings, depth is built with the textural patterning of color enhanced by ink and pencil.
My focus in painting is the dreamscape of my mind. Visionary motifs develop from my surroundings +imagination. I love color very much. Expressing myself through painting, I use indoor/outdoor space weaving together flowers, trees, still life +real life. Recent exhibition history includes Watercolor Art Society Houston +Koelsch Gallery Houston during my 4 year residency in Texas. During 5 decades of painting I have had 26 solos, 125 group shows. I live in the Cascade mountains of Washington. Often I paint motifs from my surroundings including elements of landscape, flowers +vessels. I paint in acrylic on wood or canvas +in watercolor. I started painting in watercolor as a way of escaping the exactitude of certain restraints in my life. I came to Seattle from New Orleans Louisiana for graduate study with Jacob Lawrence at UW. I taught painting, drawing +watercolor at the University of Washington, Seattle Central College, Bellevue College, Pratt Fine Arts and Morehead State University.
