Jieyi Ludden Zhou
Oracle Deer Bathed in Sunlight
batik, 6ft x 4ft, 2024, NFS
explores the octagonal flower motif, a symbol of auspiciousness in Nüshu, incorporating a deer, a symbol of good fortune, inspired by the deer carvings in Shanggantang. The deer’s single eye references oracle bone script, where the deer also had one eye, reflecting the deep historical roots of Nüshu.
My work explores cultural memory, ecology, and feminine craft traditions. As someone of mixed heritage—born in the U.S. to a Chinese mother and an American father—I grew up feeling both connected to and distanced from my roots. In 2023, I relocated to China to deepen my relationship with this part of myself and have since traveled to various regions to learn from traditional women-centered craft practices.

I primarily work with paper and textiles.
