She does not look back. Behind her, the wolf stands alert and attuned — not as possession or dominance, but as kin, witness, and guardian. The painting reflects inner knowing: the wild wisdom that protects us when we trust ourselves enough to soften beyond fear.

My work explores the relationship between the human spirit and the natural world through expressive, layered painting. Hidden figures, animals, shifting light, and atmospheric landscapes invite quiet discovery and emotional connection. Working intuitively with gesture, transparent and opaque paint, and evolving imagery, I create spaces where boundaries soften — between self and environment, seen and unseen, inner experience and the living world.

Susan E. Wheeler is a Pacific Northwest artist whose work is influenced by a background in dance, movement, and a lifelong connection to nature. After years in arts education, she returned to painting with a focus on expressive, layered imagery that blends human presence, atmosphere, and the natural world. Through intuitive process and evolving symbolism, her work explores connection, inner experience, and quiet discovery.
